The aftermath of the Zimmerman verdict

Reread the article we read in DEAR today; "NYC Teen Envisions Constant Profiling, Death threat after Zimmerman verdict." The article  was written by 17 year-old senior Justin Francis a NYC teen.

Respond to the following quote from the article:

"We now have to be more careful where we go, change the way we walk and talk, and strip away parts of our identity in an effort to separate ourselves from a stereotype that cost Martin his life."

  1. I agree with quote from Justin Francis. Everyday I get up I think about the way people percieve one another wrong. Everytime I think about my career choice I also think of the struggle I could meet just from the color of my skin. I always think about how to avoid trouble b/c I doubt the law would give me justice. The daily news report court cases and majority of the time the verdict seems unfair. It frightens me as a black female I too , if im not careful, I could end up like martin . It hurts knowing that im a victim to stereotypes.

  2. For starters the jury decision to plead Zimmerman not guilty has me questioning our court system. Not only was I disappointed in the decision, but the fact that an innocent teenager died and NO justice was served shows me that society is really messed up. Justin Francis Is right when he says "We now have to be careful where we go, change the way we walk and talk, and strip away parts of our identity in an effort to separate ourselves from a stereotype that cost Martin his life." The way we carry ourselves as a minority is the cause for stereotyping and racial profiling. The reason why so many minorities get stop and frisked is because the way we carry ourselves and allow society to percept that we are all alike. That the image of someone who would be a potential criminal Is described as black, hispanic, wearing baggy pants or wearing a hoodie with the hood up. As a society we need to change so that this perception is not disproportionately represented.

  3. I agree with this quote because the way people act is the reason people make stereotypes , cus stupid is , is what stupid does . So in order for u to not be percieved as these things have some morals and class. And maybe people will see u as equal . Zimmerman problay saw how many black kids wear their close now a days. Soo he problay felt threatend because of gangs and other stuff.

  4. I think this is a very meaningful quote. Peolpe get judged because of what they do or what they say. Based on someones actions people turn them into stereotypes. So people becomed labled because of that and thats not fair because not everyone is alike. People shouldnt have to change the way they walk or dress just because of stereotypes. Eveyone should be comfortable for who they are as a person. So it was unfair that trayvon was targeted because of the way he looked.

  5. I agree with the quote. I'm even more apprehensive about my welfare in this society. I'll always be a suspect, receive the weird glances and have assumptions made about me based on others acts. Knowing this man was acquitted makes me feel as if my life is constantly in jeopardy, because of the color of my skin.

  6. I agree with this quote because people fail to realize that the way you act is how you fit sterotypes. It was also unfair that trayvon was targeted because of the way he looked eveyone should be respected .. - Nia Williamson

  7. i agree with this quote because there is so much stereotyping going on that now we have to act a certain so we dont get put into those stereotypes which is ridiculous because no one should be judged by the color of their skin and it is evident that racism and stereotyping is a huge issue especially with the trayvon case.

  8. This qoute makes a lot of since. Not only that but if we want society to change we have to start with our selves.

  9. After the court pleaded Zimmerman not guilty i know believe that our government is all rigged. I agree with the statement because when we want to change society we have to change it ourselves. It's not the color of our skin that people judge us its how society portrays us.

  10. I absolutely agree with the quote. As a black teen, I am always aware of my conduct in public, especially around Caucasians. I feel that Caucasians, watch African Americans every move and how they talk so , when around them I speak professional. They seem amazed when they see me because, my pants aren't sagged and I speak proper.

  11. "We now have to be more careful where we go, change the way we walk and talk, and strip away parts of our identity in an effort to separate ourselves from a stereotype that cost Martin his life."- Justin Francis .This quote is very true. I Can actually related to what he is saying . There was so many times i walk next a white person without them looking at me like im a unknown species, going into Chinese , Indian , Arab stores without them thinking im stealing . it so not fair that these stereotype justify who i am as a person . Why in order for me to to have some RESPECT i had to change my appearance , my vocabulary . I Thought This was a country of "freedom" Not alteration ... - Na'Daije Gresham

  12. I agree with what was said in this quote. I feel like the verdict would make more people try to be vigilantes. They would start targeting minorities in our age group because that's where the crime happens.

  13. I agree with what the quote said. I believe that the verdict would make tge people more like criminals that civilians. They would started targeting the minorities because that's where the crime happens.

  14. To me this quote means that just we should be more aware and careful of the places in which we go , how we walk , talk and how we dress because of the stereotypes towards black people . I dont think its right that people stereotype black people and think just cause of their skin color that they are different from other people.

  15. I agree with this quote because african Americans have a reason to feel afraid because Martin was killed even though he was innocent.

  16. I agree with the quote because the stereotype does play a huge role in why Trayvon's life was taken. I feel the reduction was completely bias to not just the fact that Zimmerman is white, but he was connected to te system thru blood, his father also being a judge in Florida. It's a shame that now subconscious actions must be thought out and changed for the perception of ignorant racist others.

  17. i aggree with this quote becuase people should be able to feel safe on the streets where they walk on every day .. and not afraid that some random person is following them becuase they have a hood on..

  18. I totally agree with Justin Francis, and totally agree with the quote because people that stereotype are really the ignorant ones, and obviously don't know the past history of our races. We all started from 1 race, but as time evolved over time, people spread throughout the world, some places were colder, & some places were hotter. Therefore people's skin colors will be different, but besides that point! I feel like majority of teenagers are feeling scared because of the Zimmerman verdict. Its ridiculous how some teenager can get shot and killed and the killer gets off scott free. Also i feel that most teenagers are scared now, & they might try to change the way they act & look in public, for there safety, which is ridiculous, i feel that nobody should tell somebody how to talk and walk, if they aren't doing anything illegal for them to be stopped, then let them be! After all we do live in a a free country.

  19. I aggree with this quote beacause what it trying to say i think is that if we dont change the form we speak not speaking slang and not greating one another as in "wassupp my N****". What they want us talk is formal and respectfully. And adressing the way we dress is what they want the system is to stop pants sagging. But honestly i dont like the way, that you have to be in fear to walk down the block may be to the store. I know HATE is a strong word, but i HATE zimmerman with a passion. how do you take a boys life like that, like what gives you the right to do so ?!

  20. it isnt okay that certain people have to change in order to please society it isnt okay that everyday they need to make sure that what happened to martin doesnt happen to them as well, just because of who they are or what they look like. a majority of our generation today act alike, does that mean they are all up to no good? no, does that mean they do bad things? no, but martins case was an example of how messed up society really is and its sad that we now have to change in order to be alittle more safe out there.

  21. i aggree with this quote becuase for example, trayvon mating incident. I feel like people should be able to feel comfortablebwmd also safe whenever they come out they house Anf walk down the streets. Also, I feel like no one should feel scared, and afraid because of some random person following them while you got a hood on

  22. This quote means to me that, we cant be our selves anymore because if we act how we act in the outside world then the same thing could happen to us just like what happen to martin.

  23. I agreee with this quote because people are judged for all the wrong reason its not the race culture or skin color that determines the type of person u are its the content of your character and your personality

  25. i agree with this quote because me as a young black male about the same age as trayvon cant walk down a street with a hood on at night without fearing of me getting shot and no justice being served

  26. i agree with this quote beacuse all of these crimes happening is making this statment go fearther than it would have to go alot of people getting locked up and getting out for killing people but alot of people still locked up for lil thing that should be out a long time ago

  27. i agree with the quote becaus ei belive we get sterotyped by the people who we associated our selfs with and also who we hang around. this is why our parent always tell us bad association spoils usfull habbits because depending on where you are and who u associate with it can alter your life. so i do agree with this young man who says we have to be carfull every where we go.

  28. I agree with the quote. as a young black man i know that people are looking at me a certain type of way and that i must be careful with my surroundings where i go, what i do and how i look

  29. I feel this quote is trying to say that now we gotta stop being who we are ,stop bein what makes us different because we would be judged off of how we show our self cause maybe we would get miss judged jus like how travon got miss understood
